In the pre-Islamic period Jahiliyyah, the term “asaba” referred to a people who are related through the male side of the family while the term “aşabiyyah” referred to a common sense of unity and cooperation between the group members which enabled all of them to fight together and take action in any dangerous situation. Differing from the meaning of term, in Ibn Khaldūn’s terminology “aşabiyyah” is a key concept only can make sense in his complete work Muqaddimah. Accordingly, it could be analyzed that Kharijites had some traits which were close to fall under the term “aşabiyyah”. Hence, this work puts some assessments and discernments about how Ibn Khaldūn’s theory of “aşabiyyah” affected Khawarij thought and system.
